What research says about hypnosis, and what it doesn't

Hypnosis has been studied for decades. Here are the studies we find most useful, what they found and where they fall short, each with a link.

One thing first: none of these studies tested HypTide. They are about hypnosis in general.

  • 49 meta-analyses

with 261 studies were summarized in a 2024 review of twenty years of hypnosis research.

  • More than half

of the effects they reported were medium or large.

  • One session

was enough to learn a calming cue that still worked a week later, in a 2024 study from Jena.

A focused state you stay in charge of

Your attention narrows and the world around you fades into the background. Suggestions land more easily, and you stay aware and in control the whole time.

People respond differently. Some sink in quickly, others stay lighter. Both are normal, and research suggests a light state can be enough for some benefits.

How we choose studies

We prefer reviews of many studies and randomized trials with a comparison group. For every study, we name its main limit, and we update this page as new research appears.

Key studies

  • Review of reviews · Frontiers in Psychology, 2024

Twenty years of hypnosis research in one place

Positive effects across many areas, largest for pain, medical procedures, and children and teenagers.

Keep in mind Only 9 of 49 meta-analyses were rated high quality.

  • Randomized trial · Psychological Medicine, 2026

Self-guided audio hypnosis in daily life

Both hypnosis groups felt more alert than a pause group. The group with a calming scent also felt calmer.

Keep in mind Small to moderate effects. Stress over two weeks did not drop more than with a pause.

  • Lab experiment · Scientific Reports, 2024

A calming cue that lasted a week

One session taught a calming cue that lowered stress in a stressful task, and still worked a week later.

Keep in mind A lab setting with one specific stress task.

  • Controlled study · Scientific Reports, 2026

    Clearer thinking under pressure

One session improved planning under stress and lowered stress and anxiety compared with breathing.

Keep in mind A small group, all of them medical students.

  • Lab experiment · Sleep, 2014

Deeper sleep after a hypnosis recording

About 80% more deep sleep after a 13-minute hypnosis recording, in women who responded well to hypnosis.

Keep in mind A nap in a sleep lab, and only in people who respond well.

  • Meta-analysis · Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2015

    Hypnosis for trouble falling asleep

Hypnosis shortened the time to fall asleep compared with being on a waitlist.

Keep in mind Did not clearly beat a placebo-style comparison. Most studies were low quality.

What we can't claim

  • No study has tested HypTide. Everything above is about hypnosis in general.
  • An app is not a therapist. In the best comparison so far, a self-guided app did less well than a therapist. (study (opens in a new tab))
  • Sessions written by AI are new. No study has yet looked at sessions written this way.
  • Many studies are small. Larger, better-controlled trials are still needed.
  • Not everyone responds the same way. Some notice a clear change, others a slight one.

What we take from it

  • Made around your situation. You describe what's on your mind, and the session is written around it.
  • A length for every moment. Quick for a reset during the day, Deep and Immersive to settle in and go further.
  • Easy to come back to. Hypnosis often works better with practice, and your sessions stay in your library.
